“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)
I’m not a superstitious person. I’ve been known to throw caution to the wind and walk directly under ladders. I’m certain I’ve broken a couple mirrors, but I don’t remember suffering through seven years of bad luck because of it. I’ve yet to come across a stray horseshoe pointing toward or away from me, so I have no idea if finding one would have changed my luck. But what is it about random pennies turning up?
It happened again this morning. A single penny found it’s way into my day.
During difficult times I find it easy to rely on God’s strength in my weakness. Reaching out to Him in prayer creates a calming reassurance within when the worries of life try to drag me down. But when life gets a little hectic (even if things are going great) I sometimes forget to acknowledge the joy He brings into my life. It doesn’t seem quite right and I know God would agree. My devotion to Him shouldn’t ebb and flow like the tides of my life.
I discovered today’s penny as I opened my wallet. Although my change pouch was intact and tightly zippered shut, there it was – a lone coin resting on top of my receipts. It’s always leaves me a little perplexed, but before adding it to my jar I paused to praise Him for the goodness in my life.
I doubt that pennies are falling from heaven, but I’ve decided to view a lost coin as God’s prompting for praise.
Heavenly Father,
I found another penny this morning and turned my thoughts to you. Thank you for your love and grace, and for the many blessings in my life. Guide me in remembering to honor You at all times no matter what the circumstances. Bless me with a spirit of thankfulness – on good days and bad, and everything in between. Amen
