God’s Glory in Nature

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth….And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” Genesis 1:1, 31a (ESV)

Arizona isn’t exactly known for snow flurries and freezing rain, so you can imagine my surprise when my friend, Lisa, posted online, “I just returned to Tucson from a tropical location.  I went out back to pick my daily grapefruit and got a little confused.”  Nighttime temperatures had dipped unseasonably low, so much so that an evening rain had turned to snow and ice overnight.  What a sight for ‘welcome home’ eyes!

The silent gracefulness of the photo caught my eye and held me captive.  I was fascinated by the ripe grapefruit hanging heavy and swollen with sweetness while tiny beads of water were trapped and frozen giving the allure of dripping freshness.  I regarded the fallen snow which had settled to rest on the top of branches.  My eyes followed left and back to the right, tracing the lines of contrasting whiteness and black.

God formed a feast for our eyes when he created the majesty of nature.

I’m convinced.  Sometimes the best way to worship God is to pause and acknowledge the splendor of His creation.  I can contemplate the cadence of His voice in scripture or get lost in the beauty of life’s canvas before me.  “On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.” Psalm 145:5 (ESV)

Lisa’s grapefruit survived and is thriving in Tuscon; her cold-hardy tree withstood the climate craze of February.  I keep checking online for new views from her lens, trusting my friend will bless me again with a glimpse of His glory.
